Why You Hate Exercising
And how to fix it
I get there there are probably only a handful of people out there that truly LOVE working out. Ignore them. This article is for the rest of us. Those who exercise because we know it’s good for us, so we can indulge a little bit more, or because we want to look a little better-fighting off ‘dad-bod’ or ‘mom-bod’.
First, congratulations for exercising. Something is better than nothing! Second, there are 2 main reasons why you hate exercising. That’s setting you up for failure down the road. You don’t deserve that. Luckily for you, I can help.
Reason #1 Why You Hate Exercising
You don’t enjoy what you’re doing. If you want to have any chance of success long-term you need to find something you like. Way too often I hear people say something along the lines of, “I need to start running”. I reply, “Oh, you like running”. “Heavens no! I hate it! But I need to lose weight”. First step is find a mode of exercise that you enjoy. Enjoyment is part of the big 3.
Reason #2 Why You Hate Exercising
You aren’t seeing the results you want. This reason I think plagues us all at one point or another. Here’s where you need a little balancing act to walk this tightrope between doing things you need to be doing to get the fitness results you want, and still enjoying fitness and exercise.
If you want to get stronger, you’ve got to challenge your muscles by lifting your body around in different ways (pull-ups, push-ups, air squats) or lift weights. You might see some initial strength gains doing yoga, but after a little bit, the primary benefit is flexibility. So if flexibility is your goal, great work on some form of exercise that will improve that.
The problem is I see people doing things they hate trying to get a result that isn’t going to happen with that form of exercise. Will my aerobic fitness improve if I watch a whole bunch of documentaries on running, cycling, etc? No!
Pick a least distasteful form of exercise that will yield you the results you want while still doing the things you enjoy. Ideally, if you can make them one in the same, all the better.
