Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle Balance

Achieving a balance with all the good things you want to do, and all the things you have to do is the eternal struggle we face. There are many people who are out of balance because they are at one extreme or the other. They either spend upwards of 10 hours a week at the gym, or they are working 70 hours a week. Neither are healthy or sustainable in the long-term.

Achieving that delicate balance

I believe that in order to give something, be it your time and energy or money, you’ve got to have it first. You may have found yourself in a situation where you are the good friend, mentor, listener or peacemaker and it seems like you are just getting dumped on with everyone’s problems, emotions, etc. This takes its toll and you end up feeling like a landfill, with a sign saying, “Dump your problems here”. This is NOT the place you need or want to be in. Let’s look at what you can do before you’re burned out and exhausted.

I highly recommend that you take some time for yourself to get yourself right. I’m not suggesting you shirk any responsibilities or go overboard with this ‘me-time’. But you need to take care of yourself. There is a delicate balance you must find to be happy and have time for everything you need to do. This balance is what makes having a truly healthy lifestyle tricky.

Do a quick inventory on what you need most to be the best spouse, friend, parent, employee/boss you can be at this moment. It may be taking a quick nap, or going outside to get some sunlight, or exercising for 5 mins. I guarantee you that as you consistently take just a few moments in the grand scheme of things to take care of yourself you’ll be more productive, happier, healthier, and have more meaningful relationships. I know this is rather deep for a dumb personal trainer but give it a try. It’s small and simple steps like this done over time that yield huge payouts for your health, your goals, and your lifestyle.
