Benefits from a comprehensive fitness program

We mentioned earlier about the different components that make up a comprehensive fitness program, or one that fulfills the ACSM’s physical activity guidelines. What we didn’t cover was several of the known and proven benefits from different types of exercise.

Reaching the 4 pillars is critical for overall health and wellness. This isn’t a buffet. You need to reach the dosage in each pillar. Many falsely believe that they can get all the benefits from just meeting one pillar of fitness. This is simply incorrect. If you want specific results, you’ve got to do the right things that will yield the right results.

Benefits of aerobic conditioning

Benefits of mobility/flexibility

Benefits of neuromotor training

Benefits of resistance training

As you can see, if you’re looking for the magic bullet, strength training is it. However, it’s also the pillar that is most often ignored or done incorrectly. To get the benefits listed with resistance training, you’ve got to get the intensity correct, which will adjust as you get stronger. You also need to periodically change a few variables to keep you progressing. Doing the same weight, same reps, same sets, same exercises for months and years at a time is a recipe for burnout, and platuaes.
