Daren’s story is nothing short of remarkable. In his late 60s, he’s faced more health challenges than most people encounter in a lifetime, yet he’s still getting stronger, nine years into his personal training journey. His resilience and commitment are an inspiration, especially to older adults who may feel like they’ve hit a wall in their fitness journey.

Daren was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a type of arthritis that primarily affects the spine. It causes inflammation in the joints, leading to chronic pain and stiffness. Because of that, he’s undergone three major back surgeries, had a brain tumor removed, and had to relearn how to hear using a cochlear implant. Despite these challenges, Daren has spent nearly a decade focused on his health, using personal training to reclaim his strength, mobility, and independence.

Facing Ankylosing Spondylitis with Strength

Ankylosing spondylitis is a degenerative condition, but Daren refuses to let it define him. Regular personal training has helped him keep his body mobile and strong, which is critical for managing the symptoms of AS. For older adults, maintaining mobility and strength is essential, especially when dealing with chronic conditions like arthritis. Daren’s program includes mobility work to keep his spine that isn’t fused mobile, strength training to support his joints, and a tailored approach to prevent flare-ups.

Rebuilding After Major Back Surgeries

Recovering from three back surgeries is a challenge for anyone, but for someone in their 60s, it can feel especially daunting. Daren worked hard through his recovery, never losing sight of his goals. His personal training sessions have helped him rebuild muscle, improve his posture, and reduce the risk of further injury. Strength training for older adults isn’t just about lifting weights—it’s about improving the quality of life. Daren’s determination to get stronger despite his past surgeries shows that age or medical history doesn’t have to hold you back.

Adapting to Life with a Cochlear Implant

Daren’s journey didn’t stop with his arthritis challenges. He and his trainer started noticing some significant and very specific deficits to his balance. After trying several drills and exercises to help his balance unsuccessfully, Daren got some imaging and discovered the tumor was on a nerve affecting his balance. After undergoing brain tumor removal, he had to adapt to not just hearing through a cochlear implant, but to relearn how to balance! This took patience and perseverance, but just like his physical training, Daren faced it head-on. His customized exercise prescription created an environment where balance and coordination are also worked on helped him adjust to his new way of hearing, ensuring he could continue his progress without feeling overwhelmed by this new aspect of his life.

How His Training Has Changed

When Daren first came to see us, he was interested in just losing the last 5-10 pounds of fat. He worked one-on-one with his trainer.

Later, he work with his husband as a way to stay in shape and hold each other accountable to their healthy lifestyle.

For the last several years, Daren has been putting in the hard work on his own, with the help of monthly coaching check-ins and his daily exercise prescription delivered via an app.

Not only has he improved and gotten stronger, Daren has become a proficient independent exerciser!

Why Daren’s Success Matters

Daren’s story serves as a powerful reminder that personal training can truly change lives, especially for older adults. It’s not just about gaining strength or losing weight—it’s about overcoming the odds and proving that you’re capable of more than you thought possible. Whether you’re managing a chronic condition like ankylosing spondylitis or recovering from surgery, the right program can make all the difference.

Daren’s success over the past nine years is a testament to the power of consistency, patience, and a never-give-up attitude. At nearly 70, he’s still getting stronger, setting an example for others that it’s never too late to start or continue on your fitness journey.
