Is Leverage Fitness Right for Your Back Pain? Here's Exactly Who We Help

Not sure if personal training is right for your back pain? Here's exactly who Leverage Fitness helps — and who we don't — so you can make the right decision for your situation.

Key Takeaways

  • Leverage Fitness is best suited for adults 40–70+ with mechanical back pain who want a long-term, active solution.
  • We are not the right fit for people seeking passive treatment, quick fixes, or who are in acute surgical crisis.
  • Our approach requires commitment — typically 2–3 sessions per week for 90 days minimum.
  • We serve Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Millcreek, Holladay, Murray, Draper, and South Salt Lake UT.
  • The free Healthy Back Handbook is a great first step to see if our approach resonates with you.

We're going to do something unusual here: we're going to tell you honestly who we're a great fit for — and who we're not.

Not every personal training studio is right for every person. Not every back pain approach works for every condition. And we'd rather help you make the right decision for your situation than have you invest time and money in a program that isn't designed for your needs.

So here's the honest breakdown of who Leverage Fitness helps with back pain, and who we don't.

This Is For You If...

You're between 40 and 70 and want to stay active for decades

Our entire program is built around this demographic. We understand the physiology of aging — how muscle mass, bone density, and nervous system function change after 40, and how to train in a way that works with those changes rather than against them. If you're in this age range and your back pain is limiting your ability to live the active life you want, you're exactly who we're designed to help.

You've tried other approaches and they haven't stuck

Chiropractic. Physical therapy. Yoga. Stretching. Rest. If you've done these things and your back pain keeps coming back, it's not because you failed — it's because those approaches addressed your symptoms without building the resilience that prevents recurrence. That's the gap we fill.

You have mechanical low back pain

Disc herniations, disc degeneration, stenosis, facet joint irritation, SI joint dysfunction, spondylolisthesis, muscle imbalances — these are the conditions we work with every day. Our trainers are trained in spine biomechanics and understand how to program around these conditions safely and effectively.

You want to understand your body, not just follow instructions

We teach. Every session includes explanation — why we're doing this exercise, what it's targeting, how it connects to your back pain. Our clients leave each session with a deeper understanding of their own body. That knowledge is part of what makes results permanent.

You're willing to commit to the process

Meaningful, lasting results from back pain training require consistency. We recommend 2–3 sessions per week for a minimum of 90 days. If you're looking for a quick fix or a short-term program, we're probably not the right fit. If you're willing to invest in a long-term solution, we can deliver one.

You want to do more than just not be in pain

Many of our clients come to us because of back pain, but stay because of everything else — the strength they build, the energy they gain, the activities they return to, the confidence that comes from knowing their body is capable. If your goal is not just pain relief but genuine vitality and longevity, you're in the right place.

This Is NOT For You If...

You're in acute surgical crisis

If you have significant neurological symptoms — progressive weakness in your legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe radiating pain that isn't responding to conservative treatment — you need to see a spine surgeon, not a personal trainer. We work with post-surgical clients, but we are not a substitute for necessary medical intervention.

You want passive treatment

We don't do massage, manipulation, or passive modalities. Our approach is entirely active — you do the work, we guide and progress it. If you're looking for a practitioner to do something to your body while you lie there, we're not the right fit.

You're looking for a quick fix

We'll be honest: if your back pain is severe and long-standing, it's not going to resolve in two weeks. The Healthy Back Handbook's acute phase protocol typically reduces pain significantly within two weeks, but building the resilience that prevents recurrence takes 8–12 weeks of consistent work. If you're not willing to invest that time, the results won't be permanent.

You're not willing to change anything outside the gym

Back pain is a lifestyle condition as much as a physical one. How you sit, how you sleep, how you move throughout the day — these factors matter enormously. We'll work with you on all of them, but if you're not open to making adjustments outside your training sessions, your progress will be limited.

You have back pain caused by a non-mechanical condition

Back pain caused by cancer, infection, inflammatory arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis), or osteoporotic fractures requires medical management, not personal training. We screen for these conditions and refer out when appropriate. If you're unsure whether your back pain is mechanical, your physician can help determine this.

What the Process Looks Like

If you're reading this and thinking "that sounds like me" — here's what happens next:

  1. Download the Healthy Back Handbook: It's free this month and gives you a clear sense of our approach. If the framework resonates with you, that's a good sign we're aligned.
  2. Book a Longevity Blueprint Calibration: This free 60-minute assessment is where we evaluate your movement patterns, identify your specific stability deficits, and determine whether our program is appropriate for your situation. We'll tell you honestly if we're not the right fit.
  3. Start the program: If we're a good match, we build your program and get to work. You'll have a clear plan, a trainer who knows your history, and a system that's been proven to work.

We serve clients from Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Millcreek, Holladay, Murray, Draper, and South Salt Lake. Our studio is at 7833 S Highland Drive in Cottonwood Heights — convenient to the entire Salt Lake Valley.

To understand exactly what the first 90 days look like, read our week-by-week breakdown of the 90-day program. And when you're ready to take the next step, contact us to book your free calibration session.

Not sure if you're ready to book a session? Start with the handbook. It's the same framework we use with every back pain client — normally $29, free this month. If it resonates, you'll know we're the right fit. If it doesn't, you'll still have a proven back pain recovery system you can use on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my doctor to work with you?

No referral is required. However, we recommend informing your physician that you're starting a personal training program, particularly if you have a diagnosed spinal condition. We're happy to communicate with your medical team and work collaboratively with your other providers.

What if I'm not sure whether my back pain is mechanical?

The most reliable way to determine this is a physician evaluation — ideally with imaging (X-ray or MRI) if your pain has been present for more than 6 weeks. Mechanical back pain is the most common type by far, accounting for approximately 85–90% of all back pain cases. If your physician hasn't identified a specific non-mechanical cause, mechanical back pain is the most likely diagnosis.

Can I work with Leverage Fitness if I live outside Cottonwood Heights?

Yes. We serve clients from across the Salt Lake Valley, including Sandy, Millcreek, Holladay, Murray, Draper, and South Salt Lake. Our hybrid personal training program also includes a remote component for clients who travel frequently or prefer to train at home between in-person sessions.

What's the difference between your approach and a regular gym personal trainer?

Most personal trainers are trained in general fitness programming — how to build muscle, improve cardiovascular fitness, and help clients lose weight. Our trainers are specifically trained in spine biomechanics, movement screening, and the progressive rehabilitation protocols used in the Healthy Back Handbook. We're not a gym with personal trainers. We're a longevity training studio that specializes in helping adults 40–70+ move better, feel stronger, and live pain-free.
