Balance Starts with Strength
Did you know that losing strength can lead to balance problems as you age? Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in older adults, but strength training for better balance can help rebuild your stability and confidence. With the right exercises, you can reduce your fall risk and maintain your independence.
For those in Salt Lake City and Cottonwood Heights, adding our customized longevity strength training to your routine can make all the difference.
Why Strength Training is Key for Balance
Strong muscles provide the foundation for stability. When your body is weak, it’s harder to recover from missteps or maintain your footing on uneven surfaces. Strength training helps by:
- Rebuilding Muscle Mass: Counteracts age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia).
- Improving Coordination: Enhances your body’s ability to respond to balance challenges.
- Reducing Fall Risk: Strengthens the lower body and core, which are critical for stability.

3 Exercises to Improve Balance Through Strength
- Split Squats:
- Take a big stride out. Hold on to something for balance if needed, or you can hold a dumbbell at chest height, or two dumbbells at your side. Keep your back heel off the ground and lower the back knee straight down. Keep you front shin vertical.
- Why It Helps: Builds strong leg muscles for stability.
2. Single-Leg Deadlifts:
-
- Stand on one leg, hinge at the hips, and reach backwards with your floating heel. Hold on to something for support.
- Why It Helps: Improves single leg strength, stabilizing muscles, and loads your hips.
3. Side Star Plank:
- Lie on your side, knees bent, stacked on top of each other. Lift your hips off the floor, push them forward while lifting the top leg up. Lower your hips down and back until your hips touch.
- Why It Helps: Strengthens the obliques and improves lateral stability.
