Key Takeaways
- A real functional fitness assessment scores 8 specific categories — not just body composition or a quick intake form.
- From the assessment, we build a prescription — not a generic program, but a specific plan built around your gaps.
- Paul’s story: came in feeling less stable and strong, left with a personalized prescription and a “10 years younger body” trajectory.
- The assessment is the starting point for everything. It’s free.
When someone comes to Leverage Fitness Solutions, the first thing we do isn’t put them on a treadmill.
We do an assessment.
Not a quick intake form. Not a body composition scan. A real, comprehensive assessment that looks at eight specific categories — aerobic capacity, muscular strength, mobility, balance and coordination, hydration, protein intake, fruit and vegetable consumption, and sleep quality — and scores each one.
From that score, we build a prescription. Not a program. A prescription — specific to that person’s body, their gaps, their goals, and their history.
Paul’s Story
Paul came in about two months ago. He wasn’t out of shape. He wasn’t in pain. He’d been active his whole life — still playing golf, still getting out on the trails. But something had shifted. He felt less stable than he used to. Less strong. He noticed he was grabbing the railing on the stairs without thinking about it.
He didn’t think he needed a trainer. He thought he just needed to work out more.
The assessment changed that.
In his words, it was “eye opening.” For the first time, he had a clear picture — not a general sense, but a specific, scored picture — of exactly where his body was strong and exactly where the gaps were. His aerobic fitness was solid. His strength was below where it needed to be. His mobility had significant restrictions he hadn’t noticed. His protein intake was about half of what his body needed to support muscle repair.
Two months later, he’s stronger, more agile, and has better balance. He has his own personalized exercise prescription — built around what his specific body needs, not a generic program designed for the average person. His words: “Ten years younger body — here I come.”
What the Assessment Actually Measures
The eight categories we assess aren’t arbitrary. They’re the specific components that research consistently identifies as the primary drivers of functional performance and longevity in adults over 50.
Aerobic capacity determines your cardiovascular health, your recovery speed, and your ability to sustain effort over time.
Muscular strength — specifically grip strength, lower body strength, and core stability — determines your joint support, your injury resistance, and your ability to do the things you love without breaking down.
Mobility across your hips, thoracic spine, shoulders, and ankles determines whether your body can move through the ranges it needs to without compensating in ways that create injury risk.
Balance and coordination — your neuromotor fitness — determines how well your nervous system controls your body during dynamic movement. This is one of the most undertested and undertrained components for active adults over 50.
Nutrition — specifically protein, hydration, and the quality of your diet — determines whether your body has the raw materials it needs to recover, rebuild, and adapt to training.
Why “Prescription” Is the Right Word
A program is generic. A prescription is specific. A program says “do these exercises three times a week.” A prescription says “given your specific mobility restrictions, your strength deficits, your aerobic base, and your nutrition gaps, here is the exact combination of training and nutrition that will move your functional age in the right direction — and here’s how we’ll measure progress.”
The difference in outcomes is significant. Clients who follow a generic program get generic results. Clients who follow a prescription built around their specific assessment get results that actually match their goals.
